Montana transgender lawmaker silenced again, backers protest

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 17:07:36 GMT

HELENA, Mont. (AP) — Montana Republicans persisted in forbidding Democratic transgender lawmaker Zooey Zephyr from participating in debate for a second week and her supporters brought the House session to a halt Monday — chanting “Let her speak!” from the gallery before they were escorted out.Zephyr defiantly hoisted her microphone into the air as her supporters interrupted proceedings for nearly half an hour in protest of Republicans denying her requests to speak on a proposal that would restrict when children can change the names and pronouns they use in school and require parental consent. The interruption — hours after supporters rallied on the Capitol steps — was the latest development in a standoff over Zephyr’s remarks against lawmakers who support a ban on gender-affirming care for minors. Zephyr, a first-term Democrat from Missoula, hasn’t spoken on the Statehouse floor since last Tuesday when she told Republican colleagues they would have “blood on their hands” if the...

FIRST, THE MONDAY WEATHER HEADLINES---WHAT A TEMP TURNAROUND WE'VE SEEN THIS MONTH—April 2023, on a week ago running more than 10-degrees warmer than the same period a year ago, has lost that edge. April 2023, given the chill of recent days—including the just completed weekend which came in more than 21-deg cooler than last weekend---has now fallen 1-deg behind a year ago.---While STILL POSTING A 4.6-DEG SURPLUS and having recorded 14 of its opening 24 days ABOVE NORMAL, the recent chill has taken its toll on the April 2023 Chicago temp average.--AND another chilly few days lie ahead. In fact, A FREEZE WATCH HAS ALREADY BEEN ISSUED for much of the Chicago area Tuesday night and Wed morning. And WITH TEMPS in the mid 20s by morning within 4,000 ft. of the surface, showers predicted to ride into the area may well be mixed with some snowflakes over at least part of the metro area.--It's even possible some snow could temporarily stick on colder outdoor surfaces, particularly in northern...

Prosecutor: Proud Boys viewed themselves as 'Trump's army'

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 17:07:36 GMT

WASHINGTON (AP) — Ready for “all-out war,” leaders of the far-right Proud Boys extremist group viewed themselves as foot soldiers fighting for Donald Trump as the former president clung to power after the 2020 election, a prosecutor said Monday at the close of a historic trial over the U.S. Capitol insurrection. After more than three months of testimony, jurors began hearing attorneys' closing arguments in the seditious conspiracy case accusing Proud Boys national chairman Enrique Tarrio and four lieutenants of plotting to forcibly stop the transfer of power from Trump to President Joe Biden. The Proud Boys were “lined up behind Donald Trump and willing to commit violence on his behalf," prosecutor Conor Mulroe told jurors. “These defendants saw themselves as Donald Trump's army, fighting to keep their preferred leader in power no matter what the law or the courts had to say about it." The prosecution's words underscore how the Justice Department has worked throughout the trial to li...

Experimental water release to continue Lake Mead rise

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 17:07:36 GMT

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- A large release of water from Lake Powell began Monday morning, sending water on a two-day journey through the Grand Canyon - where it will help restore sandbars and beaches while moving sediment downriver - to Nevada's Lake Mead.Monday's water release from the Glen Canyon Dam is known as a High Flow Experiment (HFE) by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation. The National Park Service (NPS) is working with Reclamation to ensure people using the Colorado River in the canyons know a surge of water is on the way.The last time Reclamation conducted an HFE was in November 2018 and has been doing them sporadically since 1996. Lake Powell, much like Lake Mead, has seen its water level rise and subside over the years, but the last time it was full was the summer of 1983. That summer, Reclamation released more than 100,000 cubic feet per second (cfs) to lower the reservoir and help the downriver canyons. Lake Mead and Lake Powell are swelling. Here’s what that means for the wat...

With appeal looming, MN judge puts handgun permits for 18 to 20-year-olds on hold

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 17:07:36 GMT

A federal ruling that made gun carry permits accessible to 18- to 20-year-olds in Minnesota is on hold for at least a month and potentially longer.U.S. District Judge Katherine Menendez sided Monday with state lawyers who sought to hold off on permits until a likely appeal is settled. The Department of Public Safety and some county sheriffs are fighting an earlier Menendez ruling that the age restriction on concealed carry permits is unconstitutional.Attorney General Keith Ellison, a DFLer, has said he would appeal the March ruling that determined the age limit to be a violation of the Second Amendment. Minnesota law has restricted the permits to adults 21 and older who met other qualification standards. In her latest order, the judge wrote that requiring sheriffs to issue permits to valid applicants could create problems if the underlying ruling is overturned on appeal.“If no stay is entered, various county sheriffs will likely begin issuing permits to individuals between 18 and 21 ...
