Southern California mountain communities like Wrightwood have been hurting as major storms in the region have dwindled the number of tourists visiting this winter.Locals say although this time of year is typically a busy season, a series of historic winter storms battering the area has scared off tourists who would normally hit the slopes and support small businesses during their stay. The snowstorm blocked off road access to many San Bernardino mountain communities earlier this year and left many residents stranded without food or power. After the snowstorms have cleared, local shop owners are truly hoping visitors will decide to come up and support the mountain communities that need it most.“All of our businesses here run off tourists and we don’t have the tourists here,” said Alice Braune, owner of Alice’s Vintage Cottage. “I’m here every day talking to myself.”Braune’s shop in downtown Wrightwood is hurting as many Angelenos have forgone their usual trip to the slopes this year am...VIDEO: Yelp review of Millbrae boba tea shop proves to be fake after customer caught sabotaging drink

More than half of California free of drought conditions The Central Sierra Snow lab has boarded up its windows to prevent them from breaking under the pressure of high snowbanks and their phone lines recently went down for two weeks. It’s not been an easy year to live and work in the Sierra.“Seven hundred and fifteen inches effectively takes us to second place in the snowiest years measured at the snow lab since 1946,” said Andrew Schwartz, lead scientist at the UC Berkeley Central Sierra Snow Lab.According to Schwartz, the only winter to beat this year was the winter of 1952 with 812 inches of snow. ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Bryce Harper was placed on the 10-day injured list Thursday by the Philadelphia Phillies, who avoided the 60-day list for their star slugger and left open the opportunity that he could return before the end of May.Dave Dombrowski, the Phillies president of baseball operations, said the timeline on Harper’s return from reconstructive elbow surgery hasn’t really changed. The good thing about it is that everything so far has been positive as far as his rehab is concerned,” Dombrowski said in the dugout before the season opener at Texas. “He feels good. By: David Soberman, University of TorontoSince Nordstrom announced it was pulling out of Canada, there has been a maelstrom of articles about the pervasive failure and exodus of U.S. retailers from Canada. Aside from Nordstrom, American retailers that have failed in Canada include Bed Bath and Beyond and Target. But the list of Canadian retail failures is almost as long as the U.S. list, and includes well-known names such as Zellers, Eaton’s and all of the Dylex brands. Meanwhile, some of the most successful retailers in Canada — including Home Depot, Walmart and Costco — are also American. So the perspective that U.S. retailers are somehow more prone to failure than Canadian retail chains is unconvincing. However, something is going on that makes retailing in Canada more challenging than ever.Online shift isn’t the reasonOne of the key explanations given by pundits for why retail is so challenging in Canada is the switch to online buying. For many, the advantages of online shopping a...Opinion: Ontario’s new child welfare policy is promising, but youth leaving care need more support

At the same time, the province committed to a child welfare redesign to strengthen support for youth leaving care. The moratorium expires on March 31, with a redesigned policy coming into effect on April 1. While the new policy appears promising for youth leaving care, there are some important gaps that require the Ontario government’s attention.Aging outThe pandemic illuminated shortcomings in Ontario’s child welfare policy. High numbers of youth aging out of care face poverty and homelessness, do not complete high school and have significant mental and physical health challenges.Under these circumstances, many experience victimization and criminalization. It is clear this framework does not effectively support youth leaving ...Latest news
