Tom Emmer drops out of speaker’s race, hours after being nominated

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 20:30:10 GMT

(CNN) — House Republicans are once again scrambling for a path forward after Minnesota Rep. Tom Emmer dropped his bid for speaker just hours after winning his party’s nomination. The swift exit from the race is the latest sign that Republicans are still no closer to electing a new speaker three weeks after Kevin McCarthy’s historic ouster. The House remains in a state of paralysis, and Republicans remain unable to govern as the conference has repeatedly failed to coalesce around a successor to McCarthy amid deep division within the ranks. The politically precarious situation has plunged the House into uncharted territory as it looks increasingly unclear whether any Republican can get the 217 votes needed to win the gavel.Emmer is now the third Republican to win the nomination of the GOP conference only to then exit the race after failing to lock up the necessary votes to win the gavel.Earlier in the day, Emmer’s bid to be speaker appeared on the verge of collapse amid o...

Internal investigation underway after video shows officer pinning man to the ground in Revere

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 20:30:10 GMT

Revere police this week confirmed an internal investigation is underway after an officer was caught on camera pinning a man to the ground. The incident happened last week outside a Walgreens location on Broadway. Police have since said an officer, whose name was not being released as of Tuesday, is off the streets after being placed on what is known as modified duty. “Crazy,” said one man reacting to video of the incident. The video has been making the rounds on social media. While the video certainly looks disturbing, residents on Tuesday said it is important to see or at least know what happened before and after the camera was rolling. “There’s two sides to a story,” the same man said after seeing the video. “I don’t react to partial things,” another person said. “It’s not fair to everybody involved.” At City Hall, Revere Acting Mayor Patrick Keefe released a statement. “The trust of the public is paramount to public safety and I applaud the...

Giants hiring former Red Sox catcher as new manager, but not Jason Varitek

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 20:30:10 GMT

The San Francisco Giants are filling their managerial vacancy by replacing one former Red Sox player with another. After firing Gabe Kapler with three games left in the regular season, Bob Melvin will leave San Diego for San Francisco. The Athletic’s Andrew Baggarly broke the news on Tuesday afternoon, two days after the outlet reported the Padres had granted the Giants permission to interview Melvin, who had one year remaining on his contract.Melvin, who turns 62 this week, only managed in San Diego for two seasons, but his departure isn’t exactly a surprise. Increasing tensions between him and general manager A.J. Preller made headlines throughout the 2023 season; that the Padres were willing to let a National League West rival interview and hire their manager indicates a manager-GM relationship eroded to the point of no return. Preller will now search for his seventh Padres manager in nine years. It’s also a homecoming for the three-time Manager of the Year, who grew up in the Bay ...

Will Patriots stick with Mike Onwenu at right tackle?

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 20:30:10 GMT

The Patriots have spent all season plugging holes on their injury-riddled offensive line, and Sunday they finally found a workable combination after bumping fourth-year lineman Mike Onwenu from right guard to right tackle. Will that prove a long-term move or a temporary shift? The Patriots coaching staff isn’t sure, and it will depend in large part on the unit’s injury situation.“We’ll have to see how it goes,” said offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien. “We practice tomorrow so we’ll see where everyone is relative to health and all those things as we move forward.”Onwenu allowed a single pressure in 37 pass-blocking snaps against Buffalo and earned his highest single-game grade this season from Pro Football Focus. As an offensive line, the Patriots recorded a 50% success rate on running plays and allowed pressure on just 21.2% of their dropbacks. The idea of Onwenu playing tackle isn’t new. The former sixth-round pick started 1...

FRANKLIN – Scott Paine knows it would add a lot more onto his plate as the MIAA statewide hockey tournament director. He also wants to ensure that as many people as possible enjoy the postseason experience. At Tuesday’s MIAA Tournament Management Committee meeting, the group voted unanimously that tournament games beginning with the quarterfinals (Round of 8) would be played at neutral facilities. For this round only, the higher seed would be allowed to select what was previously approved by the TMC with the understanding Paine would have final say.“I remember last year’s Reading-Braintree game in the Round of Eight where Braintree got the home game (at Zapustas Rink in Randolph) and we wound up turning away nearly 2,000 people,” Paine said. “We have great venues like Gallo, Loring, Stoneham, Chelmsford, Olympia, Woburn and Tsongas with more seating and they have proven that they want to host games.”Hockey is unique from most other MIAA sports in that few schools have thei...

She offers detailed, cogent accounts of indignities that would leave anyone seething. AMIZMIZ, Morocco (AP) — Hundreds of protesters on Tuesday took to the streets of a city near the epicenter of a devastating earthquake that hit Morocco last month to express anger and frustration after weeks of waiting for emergency assistance.Flanked by honking cars and motorcycles, demonstrators in the High Atlas town of Amizmiz chanted against the government as law enforcement tried to contain the crowds. The protest followed a worker’s strike and torrential weekend storms that exacerbated hardship for residents living in tents near the remains of their former homes.“Amizmiz is down!,” men yelled in Tachelhit, Morocco’s most widely spoken Indigenous language.Entire neighborhoods were leveled by the Sept. 8 quake, forcing thousands to relocate to temporary shelters. North Carolina Republicans close in on new districts seeking to fortify GOP in Congress, legislature

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina Republicans closed in Tuesday on enacting new boundaries for the state’s congressional and legislative districts that aim to fortify GOP prospects both in the narrowly divided Congress and in the state General Assembly, where conservatives hope to solidify control there for the rest of the decade. The full Senate voted along party lines for maps for the state’s congressional delegation and for the Senate’s own districts. The state House voted later Tuesday for districts in their own chamber. House and Senate leaders aimed for their chambers to give final approval to all three maps Wednesday. They were all drawn by Republicans in time for the 2024 elections after recent state Supreme Court rulings reversed decisions of the court last year that had thrown out proposed district lines it had deemed were illegal partisan gerrymanders. The state’s highest court flipped from a Democratic to a Republican majority with the 2022 elections, ...
