CHICAGO -- Over 250 officers were sworn into the Chicago Police Department, slightly less than the last class graduate in June. Among 83 percent of the graduates are people of color and 32 percent are women. As the new officers begin their work in the city, a constant issue they face is tackling crime.Over the weekend, CPD reports that 24 people were shot and one person was killed. Among the shootings is the incident that took place at the Chicago White Sox game Friday night, where two women were injured by bullets. Illinois judge refuses to dismiss case against father of Highland Park parade shooting suspect Mayor Brandon Johnson and interim superintendent Fred Waller gave a very brief statement on the incident but did not say much.Waller also said the Chicago Police Department requested to have the game stopped initially when the injuries were reported, but the game kept going. They said they did that when they ruled out an active shooter, they allow the game to continue on.Mayo...Several carjackings, armed robberies within 2-hour span on Chicago's North and West sides: police

College football kickers are often found the shadows — or tucked away on the sideline, solemnly using their practice net to kick and stay loose — until it’s their moment to make a field goal in a game. Not Dragan Kesich. The Gophers’ fourth-year kicker from Oak Creek, Wis., towers over his colleagues at 6-foot-4 and 240 pounds, shares his opinions and stands out with bold hair colors as if he’s channeling Dennis Rodman. He has hosted the U’s social-media dispatches, “Camp with Kesich,” where he provides interviews with teammates and adds banter for short video snippets.“You know exactly who he is and the confidence he has,” head coach P.J. Fleck said.Kesich steps into a bigger role this season, replacing Matthew Trickett, who made 83 percent of his field goals (15 of 18) in his final collegiate season in 2023. JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- Missouri Governor Mike Parson is weighing in on proposed St. Louis and Kansas City gun bans. Mayor Tishaura Jones and other St. Louis leaders are pushing for legislation to prohibit “military-grade weapons” on city streets. It would make it a crime for “insurrectionists” and those convicted of hate crimes to possess firearms. Five new Missouri laws to know that become official Monday "I think you have to be very careful to stay in your lanes. Cities can’t just go out there and do what they want to do, and when there is a constitutional issue to it, or state legislature do it, they can’t supersede that. Just like we can’t supersede the federal government," said Gov. Parson. "Whether you like it or not, when the law is passed, you’ve got to obey the law, is the way I look at it, and there are no exceptions."Mayor Tishaura Jones announced the wide-ranging legislation last week, noting support from several members of the Board of Aldermen.
