MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Matt Wallner hit a grand slam in a five-run first inning, Alex Kirilloff added a two-run homer and the Minnesota Twins beat the Oakland Athletics 11-3 on a cold and drizzly night Tuesday night.Wallner’s second career grand slam went an estimated 463 feet high into the right-field seats, the 13th homer of his rookie season, off Oakland starter Paul Blackburn.“I’ve got a bad neck, I could barely get my eyes to where that ball was going,” Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said. “One of the furthest balls I’ve ever seen hit. Ever. That’s 20-something years of professional baseball. Like truly like a rocket as it went into the night. A nice way to start the game off, but then the rest of the game there were some really good things too.”Christian Vázquez added a three-run double for Minnesota, the AL Central champion that started its final home series of the regular season against the Athletics, who lost their 109th game, the most for the franchise since losing 117 in 1916 w...

They’ll plant at least two,” Courtenay said. "I've seen up to at least four."Most ...

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 04:31:29 GMT

DENVER (KDVR) -- Earlier this week, the Colorado Rockies set a new franchise record for most losses in a season, but that number will likely continue rising until the season ends on Oct. 1.But on Tuesday, the Rockies passed a milestone: 100 losses in a single season. The loss came during the second game of a day-night doubleheader against the Los Angeles Dodgers. While this isn’t a common milestone, nearly every team in the league has been there since the 162-game season was adopted in the early '60s. The Philadelphia Phillies, St. Louis Cardinals, Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Angels and New York Yankees are the only five exceptions. Survey: Coors Field has some of the best stadium food in the country The Rockies were also on that shortlist — until now. Yet even with losing nearly two-thirds of their games, the Rockies aren't at the bottom of the barrel in Major League Baseball. The Oakland Athletics have a record of 48-108, a number the Rockies cannot reach with the remaining g...

Moore: Growth, prosperity left out of DC budget battle

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 04:31:29 GMT

House Republicans are in another titanic battle with President Joe Biden on how to balance the budget. Actually, it’s a lopsided debate because Democrats have no interest at all in reducing the deficit. They are operating under the delusional idea paradigm of “Modern Monetary Theory,” which posits that the U.S. government can borrow $2 trillion from now until the end of days and it won’t hurt the economy. Were these presidential advisers the same Nobel-winning economic sages who swore in the pages of The New York Times that, don’t worry, Mr. Biden, your $6 trillion spending spree won’t cause inflation? Those of us who live down in here in the real world are horrified by the fiscal future we’re facing. Any week now, our publicly traded debt will exceed 100% of our total annual national output, and that percentage gobbled up by government debt is expected to accelerate from 100% of gross domestic product today to nearly 200% over the next 30 yea...

Editorial: Congress should lose pay if gov’t shuts down

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 04:31:29 GMT

Rep. Matt Gaetz’s request to have his pay withheld during a potential government shutdown can be seen as pure political posturing, but the Florida Republican is on to something. The Hill reported on his letter to Catherine Szpindor, House chief administrative officer:“It is my understanding that pursuant to the Constitution, members of Congress will continue to receive their pay during a lapse in appropriations. Therefore, I am requesting that in the case of a lapse of appropriations beginning at 12:00 a.m. on October 1, 2023, my pay be withheld until legislation has taken effect to end such lapse in appropriations in its entirety,” he wrote. This should be the standard course of action for all in Congress – and the White House. If no consensus is reached on spending and there’s a government shutdown, millions of federal workers face delayed paychecks, including any of the 2 million military personnel and more than 2 million civilian federal workers. However, President...
