Dear Abby: I regret giving this gift. After all these years, can I ask for it back?

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 19:32:25 GMT

DEAR ABBY: Many years ago, shortly after our mother’s death, my sister and I impulsively gave our friend my mother’s pearl necklace. We have regretted it ever since. We wish we hadn’t acted so quickly, because the pearls were a gift from our dad to our mom.Is it too late to ask her to return it? I’d like to pass it on to my granddaughter but don’t want to offend my long-lost friend. At any rate, I have learned — and hope others will heed this advice — do not act impulsively when giving away precious mementos of your loved ones. You may regret it.Thank you, Abby, for considering this sensitive issue. God bless.REGRET IT IN THE EASTRelated ArticlesAdvice | Dear Abby: Should I tell what my friend is doing with the GoFundMe money? Silicon Valley Bank collapse sets off scramble in London to shield UK tech sector

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 19:32:25 GMT

LONDON — The U.K. government was scrambling on Sunday to limit the fallout for the British tech sector from the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank, a big U.S. lender to many startups and technology companies. The government is treating the potential reverberations as “a high priority” after a run on deposits drove California-based SVB into insolvency, marking the largest bank failure since the global financial crisis, U.K. Chancellor of the Exchequer Jeremy Hunt said in a statement Sunday morning. U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and other policymakers were on alert that problems at SVB could spread.Hunt said the British government is working on a plan to backstop the cashflow needs of companies affected by SVB’s implosion and the halt in trading of its British unit, Silicon Valley Bank UK. The Bank of England announced on Friday that the U.K. unit is set to enter insolvency.Silicon Valley Bank’s “failure could have a significant impact on the liquidit...
